Look at the weather. It is raining again.
Lukas: Ich wäre jetzt so gerne in Spanien.
I would so gladly be in Spain right now.
Lisa: Oh ja. Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich sofort auswandern.
Oh yes. If I were rich, I would emigrate immediately.
Lukas: Was würdest du machen, wenn du eine Million Euro hättest?

Topic: Konjunktiv II (Hypothetical & Polite)
We use this for things that are not real (fantasies) or for being extra polite.
1. The "Big Two": Wäre & Hätte
The verbs > sein (to be) and > haben (to have) change their shape completely. They get an "e" at the end and usually an Umlaut.
English: I am / I would be
Real (Indikativ): > Ich bin
Unreal (Konjunktiv II): > Ich wäre
English: I have / I would have
Real (Indikativ): > Ich habe
Unreal (Konjunktiv II): > Ich hätte
Conjugation:
Ich wäre / hätte
Du wärst / hättest
Er wäre / hätte
Wir wären / hätten
Examples:
Real: > Ich bin müde. (Fact).
Unreal: > Ich wäre gerne fit. (Wish).
Real: > Ich habe kein Geld. (Fact).
Unreal: > Wenn ich Geld hätte... (Fantasy).
2. The "Würde" Helper (for all other verbs)
For almost every other verb (> gehen, > kaufen, > spielen), we don't change the verb itself. We use the helper > würde (would) + Infinitive.
Ich kaufe ein Auto. - > Ich würde ein Auto kaufen. (I would buy a car).
Ich gehe nach Hause. - > Ich würde nach Hause gehen. (I would go home).
3. The Politeness Hack
Using Konjunktiv II in questions makes you sound very polite.
Normal: > Kannst du mir helfen? (Can you help me?)
Polite: > Könntest du mir helfen? (Could you help me?)
Normal: > Gib mir das Wasser. (Give me the water).
Polite: > Würdest du mir das Wasser geben? (Would you give me the water?)
4. Modal Verbs in Konjunktiv
Können - > Könnte (Could).
Müssen - > Müsste (Would have to).
Sollen - > Sollte (Should).
Example: > Du solltest zum Arzt gehen. (You should go to the doctor - Advice).
